Initial Expectations: What Happens at Your Child’s First Visit?

Did you know the American Dental Association recommends making your kid’s first dental appointment by the time their first tooth erupts, which is usually around their first birthday? Then, routine visits every 6 months allow their pediatric dentist to help prevent potential problems, such as cavities and gum disease.

But if you’re unsure what to expect, you might feel nervous about scheduling the care needed to guide their still-developing smile. Continue reading to learn more about 3 things that usually happen during standard visits to help set your and your child’s minds at ease!

Step #1: Arrival & Medical History

Arriving on time is the very first step to establishing a respectful and healthy relationship with their pediatric dental team. After checking in for your child’s scheduled visit, the next step will be to complete any forms required to update their medical history, including listing any procedures, diagnoses, prescription medications, or supplements your kid takes regularly.

You might think this is unnecessary to treat their teeth and gums, but sharing current, accurate information about your little one’s general and dental health helps their provider avoid doing anything that might cause complications.

Step #2: Examination & Treatment Plan

Next, your child’s dental team will visually inspect their connective tissues and any teeth that have already grown in, depending on their age. If they find signs of potential problems, like tooth decay or periodontal issues, they’ll take the time to devise a customized treatment plan to meet your little one’s unique needs. Rest assured, any recommended services will be shared with you for your approval before proceeding.

If we don’t find any areas of concern, they will then continue with the next stage of your kid’s appointment; the cleaning.

Step #3: Cleaning and Other Services

After your child’s examination is complete, their hygienist will floss their teeth and polish then to remove any surface stains to help strengthen their enamel and connective tissues. In some cases, they might also recommend a topical fluoride treatment to strengthen your child’s teeth, helping them resist decay, injuries, and other concerns.

Other necessary services, such as tooth-colored fillings to fix cavities, will then be administered before wrapping up your child’s visit and sending them home with a happy, healthy smile!

If you still have questions about your child’s upcoming appointment or are unsure what to expect, you can learn more by contacting your pediatric dentist’s office directly. Most providers are happy to provide as much information as your family needs to feel confident about your next visit.
